Grinwis, 32, arrives in Charleston with years of experience and trophies won in both Major League Soccer and the USL Championship.
Grinwis most recently played for MLS outfit Orlando City SC, from 2018-19 and 2021-23, appearing in 11 matches for The Lions. The shot-stopper gained popularity for his heroics in the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with two saves in the penalty shootout against New York City FC to advance to the semifinals. He also helped Orlando lift the Open Cup trophy in 2022.
In the USL Championship, Grinwis previously played for the Rochester Rhinos, Saint Louis FC, Real Monarchs and Sacramento Republic. Grinwis’ rookie campaign with the Rhinos culminated in winning the league title over LA Galaxy II.
In joining Charleston, Grinwis reconnects with assistant coach Brian Jones, who was Grinwis’ goalkeeper coach for Saint Louis in 2017.
Grinwis is a native of Ada, Mich., and played collegiately at the University of Michigan, where he garnered numerous all-conference honors. He additionally featured for the Michigan Bucks from 2012 to 2014 in the USL PDL (now ‘USL League Two’), earning PDL Goalkeeper of the Year and Rookie of the Year before winning the PDL title and being named the title game’s MVP.
