Charleston Battery forward Nick Markanich made USL Championship history on September 7 at Patriots Point.
With his goal in the 50th minute vs. Sacramento Republic FC, Markanich tied the league’s single-season goal record of 25 goals.
The counterattack was brilliantly initiated by a run from Chris Allan, whose cross found Markanich on the opposite side of the box. Markanich struck the ball first time, beating goalkeeper Danny Vitiello to the far post with a shot that also went through the legs of Lee Desmond.
Six matches remain for Markanich to break the record with a 26th goal.
Additionally, Markanich is now two goals shy of tying the Battery’s club record of 27 overall goals scored in a single season (all competitions), set by Paul Conway in 2001 across the USL A-League, playoffs and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
