USL leading goal-scorer Romario Williams was named to Jamaica’s 23-man Gold Cup roster Thursday morning. The Reggae Boyz begin group play in the tournament on Sunday, July 9th against Curacao in San Diego.
Williams scored his league-leading 12th and 13th goals in the Battery’s 6-1 win over Toronto FC II last weekend. The 22-year old is averaging a goal every 84.3 minutes this season, far outpacing his average from 2016. With 13 goals and two assists, Williams has had a direct hand in 44% of Charleston’s league-high 34 goals scored this season.
Following their opening game on July 9th, Jamaica will take on Mexico on July 13th and finish group play with El Salvador on July 16th. The call-up means Williams will miss Charleston’s matches against Louisville City FC at home on July 8th and Saint Louis away on July 16th. If Jamaica advance beyond group play, they will play in the quarterfinals on either July 19th or 20th.
