Matchday Preview
The Charleston Battery return home to face Louisville City FC on Tues., April 9. Kickoff at Patriots Point is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will air on national television exclusively via CBS Sports Network.
Charleston and Louisville meet for the first time since the 2023 Eastern Conference Final, when the Battery bested LouCity, 2-1, to claim the conference crown. Arturo Rodriguez and Augi Williams scored at Patriots Point that night to send Charleston to the USL Championship Final.
The Battery (2W-0L-3D, 9pts) return after playing Rhode Island FC to a 0-0 draw on the road on Saturday. The night was dominated by defensive rigidity amid the stormy conditions in the Ocean State, which held offensive momentum to a premium. Goalkeeper Adam Grinwis tallied his third clean sheet of the season.
LouCity (4W-0L-0D, 12pts) arrive in the Lowcountry after a 5-3 dismantling of Indy Eleven on Saturday to extend their winning streak to five games. Wilson Harris led the way for Kentucky club with a hat trick and one assist. It was also the second consecutive match with five goals scored for LouCity.
Looking at the Eastern Conference table, Charleston are currently placed fourth and Louisville are first.
Storylines of the Match
Live on National TV – Tuesday’s match is highly anticipated for the competitiveness it offers, but it will also be broadcast on national television on CBS Sports Network. It is the Battery’s first of four nationally televised regular season matches this season.
Conference Final Rematch – Arguably the biggest game of the year so far for both teams, the Battery and LouCity meet again for the first time since the Eastern Conference Final. Charleston knocked off the defending conference champions 2-1 at Patriots Point after both regular season meetings ended in draws. A budding regional rivalry, suffice it to say both teams have plenty to play for come Tuesday.
Quick Turnarounds – If it feels like both teams just played not long ago, that’s because it’s true. The Battery and LouCity will juggle travel, recovery and preparation in roughly a 72-hour window between their Week 5 games last Saturday and this Tuesday.
Top Defense vs. Top Offense – Tuesday will feature one of the league’s best defenses go up against one of the league’s best attacks. The Battery are tied for the most shutouts and fewest goals conceded in the Championship. LouCity, on the other hand, have recorded the most goals and the third-most shots. It remains to be seen how the opposing strengths will match up against each other.
Budding Rivalry – In the past five meetings between the Battery and LouCity, the series is split at one win apiece and three draws. Given their clash in the Conference Final and their positions in the upper quarter of the conference standings this year, fans can expect the regional rivalry to continue to grow as the sides compete for the Eastern Conference crown again.
Packed House Expected – A capacity crowd is expected to be on hand at Patriots Point on Tuesday. Numerous sections have already sold out for the contest and tickets are continuing to move quickly. Fans can still buy tickets via SeatGeek.com, the Battery’s exclusive digital ticketing provider.
