In advance of the 15th iteration of the Carolina Challenge Cup (CCC) in February, we will count down the top 15 players to ever appear at the tournament.
Carolina Challenge Cup is a preseason round-robin tournament featuring the Battery and three Major League Soccer clubs. When CCC began in 2004, it was the first tournament hosted by a lower-league club to feature MLS teams during their preseason.
Over the course of the tournament’s 15-year history, 15 different MLS clubs have participated. CCC has featured legends of the game at the tail ends of their careers, MLS MVPs in their primes, and budding superstars.
World Cup winners, Ballon D’or recipients, and national team captains have readied themselves for upcoming seasons on the pitch at the Battery’s small 5,100-seat stadium on Daniel Island. Locals have been treated to an intimate look and behind the scenes-esque access to some of the game’s best for a decade and a half.
Over the next two weeks, we’ll count down the top 15 players to take part in Carolina Challenge Cup with a video series. The list was voted on internally; nominees were based on a number of merits including personal achievements, trophies won, and club and national team appearances.
