The Charleston Battery have signed midfielder Jarard van Schaik for the remainder of the 2017 USL season, pending league and USSF approval, the Club announced Monday.
This will be van Schaik’s second stint with the Battery; the 28-year old played in Charleston from 2013-2015 then departed to join Rayo OKC of the NASL for the 2016 season. Van Schaik made 82 appearances during his three seasons with the Battery, serving as captain for Mike Anhaeuser’s squad in his final season.
The Portland, Oregon native returns to Charleston with the team in first place in the Eastern Conference. With more than 120 USL appearances, van Schaik will bring added experience to an already veteran side as the team looks to continue its good form during the second half of the 2017 season.
Following a successful collegiate career at the University of Portland, van Schaik was selected in the third round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake. After spending preseason with the MLS club, van Schaik signed with the former NASL side Puerto Rico Islanders and played there for two seasons before joining the Battery in 2013.
Subsequent to today’s announcement, van Schaik is available for selection for Charleston’s upcoming matches. The Battery play their next two games on the road, taking on the Tampa Bay Rowdies this Saturday and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds the following Wednesday before returning home to play Orlando City B on July 29th.
