CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston Battery takes on third-place Richmond Kickers at City Stadium Wednesday, August 31st. The match is a make-up from the contest that was postponed due to weather on August 17th.
The Battery earned their first win in five matches Saturday night, beating Charlotte Independence, 1-0, at MUSC Health Stadium. The shutout was the team’s first in over a month, with the last coming against Orlando City B on July 13th. Alex Tambakis made several key saves throughout the match and kept his sixth clean sheet this season.
Maikel Chang scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute off of a feed from Ataulla Guerra. Guerra showed a good change of pace to break into the attacking third and slipped a pass through to Chang for a tap in at the back post. The goal was the Cuban’s fourth this season.
Richmond has enjoyed a good run of form recently that has moved them into the top three in the East. The Kickers are riding a ten-game unbeaten streak, racking up an 8-0-2 record over that stretch of matches.
The Kickers suffered their last loss at the hands of the Battery on July 2nd at MUSC Health Stadium. Charleston defeated their rivals comprehensively in the first match, scoring early and defending well throughout. Taylor Mueller and Heviel Cordoves scored first-half goals in the 2-0 win.
Richmond are coming off of a 1-0 win over Orlando City B at City Stadium. Defender Scott Thompson scored the Kickers’ goal, Andrew Dykstra earned the shutout in goal.
