Tonight’s Blackbaud Nonprofit of the Match is MUSC Safe Kids. Founded in 1995 and led by MUSC Children’s Health, Safe Kids Charleston Area serves Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.
Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death for children ages 19 and under in the United States. This rate is higher than that of diseases, kidnapping, and drugs combined. In South Carolina, the injury and death rate continues to be higher than the national average, with one child dying each day. 90 percent of these tragic injuries could be prevented by taking the necessary precautions.
The coalition is one of more than 400 in the United States that brings together health and safety experts, educators, corporations, foundations, governments and volunteers to protect families. Safe Kids Charleston Area is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury to children. The organization’s team of dedicated individuals utilizes a combination of resources and outreach efforts to combat accidental injuries, as well as a strategy that integrates community action, awareness/education, technology, and public policy. SKCA strives to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more.
