The Charleston Battery take on New York Red Bulls II in their second road match in four days Sunday afternoon at MSU Soccer Complex. The Battery defeated Bethlehem Steel FC, 1-0, at Goodman Stadium Thursday morning to extend their unbeaten run to eight games total, seven in league play.
Romario Williams scored his team-leading eighth goal to send Charleston on to the second leg of their two-game road trip with three points. Williams collected a pass from O’Brian Woodbine, turned, and ran at the Steel back four. After shrugging off a defender, the Jamaican center forward hit a low shot that rang off the near post and in. The goal has Williams tied for leading goal-scorer in the league with former Battery striker and current Reno 1868 man Dane Kelly.
The Battery have outscored opponents 17-7 during their unbeaten stretch, winning six games and drawing two. Conversely, Red Bulls II have lost three straight matches and have been out scored 11-5 during that run.
New York have earned their three wins this season at home, beating Harrisburg, Orlando City, and Richmond at MSU Soccer Park. Brandon Allen has scored four of his team-high six goals at home. Three of the goals have come from penalty kicks.
Previous Meeting
The Charleston Battery won, 3-2, in their previous match with New York Red Bulls II away from home. Goals from Maikel Chang, Romario Williams, and Heviel Cordoves earned the Battery three points last July, extending their unbeaten streak at the time to six games and handing New York their first loss of the season at home.
