The USL Championship announced Tuesday that Charleston Battery forward Cal Jennings was named the league’s Week 11 Player of the Week, presented by Konami eFootball. The award caps off the Battery’s triumphant Week 11, where the club’s 4-0 victory over San Antonio FC elevated Charleston to the top of the Championship standings.
Jennings celebrated his 28th birthday in style by recording a brace that gave him sole possession of the lead in the Championship Golden Boot race.
The striker’s first goal broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, converting from the penalty spot after Nathan Dossantos was brought down in the box. The birthday boy confidently slotted the ball into the bottom right corner while sending the goalkeeper the opposite way. It also extended Jennings’ run of consecutive games with a goal involvement to eight.
In the 57th minute, Jennings was well-positioned and walked in Arturo Rodriguez’s saved shot to give the Battery a 3-0 lead. The goal was his ninth of the year, breaking the tie for most in the league and placing him in first.
Jennings also recorded a match-high four chances created, along with four duels won and one successful dribble.
It is the third time Jennings has made the Team of the Week and his first Player of the Week award of the year. The selection is also the club’s 11th overall on the Team of the Week and the third Player of the Week honor.
Charleston’s next match will be away vs. Detroit City FC on Sat., May 24. The Battery’s next home match will be vs. Greenville Triumph SC on Sat., May 31, in the USL Jӓgermeister Cup. Tickets for the game are on sale now via SeatGeek.com, the club’s exclusive digital ticketing provider.
