The Charleston Battery are pleased to confirm the signing of Ivorian midfielder Houssou Landry to a multi-year contract on Sunday, pending league and federation approval.
An imposing figure in the midfield at 6-3, the 24-year-old has featured in 110 matches in the USL Championship with New Mexico United and Loudoun United FC.
“The club’s project made me want to join, and when I spoke with Coach Pirmann, he really convinced me to be part of it,” said Houssou. “I’m excited and have high expectations, I hope to help the club, on and off the field, and fight for more trophies. Regarding the style of play, I really like the team’s pressing and tactics, the Battery are a club that scores a lot and also plays solid defensively.”
Houssou was a mainstay for New Mexico in 2024, making 35 appearances across all competitions. Across the regular season and playoffs, Houssou led the team in tackles won (42), interceptions (47) and duels won (146). The midfielder also recorded one goal, one assist, 22 chances created and 33 clearances in Championship play.
“Houssou has the ability to be one of the best midfielders in all of the USL,” said Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “He is as strong and assertive as any player in our league, while also showcasing a savviness and intellect to control the game in and out of possession. Houssou will have an immediate impact in our club and should be a player our fans get excited to support for a long time.”
Houssou played the bulk of his senior career with Loudoun, where he featured in 82 matches across all competitions from 2021 to 2023. The Ivorian was also called up to D.C. United and made his debut for the MLS side during the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
A native of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Houssou began his professional career with Ivorian top-division club ASI Abengourou. He scored seven goals and tallied 16 assists in 20 games during the 2019/20 season.
Houssou is looking forward to getting started with the Battery.
“My state of mind is to bring serenity to the group, bring my experience, and above all to help the team collectively succeed this year,” said Houssou.
Houssou will wear the number 91.
The addition of Houssou brings the Battery’s total number of players to 18. The club will continue to assess players and construct the roster in the build-up to the season opener on March 8 against Louisville City FC.
