The Charleston Battery are pleased to confirm the acquisition of forward Matthew Dyan “MD” Myers from New York City FC II for an undisclosed fee, the clubs announced Thursday. Myers subsequently signed a new multi-year contract with the Battery, the transaction is pending league and federation approval.
Myers won the Golden Boot for the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro season after scoring 19 goals for NYCFC II, along with recording five assists, across 28 games. The talisman earned MLSNP Best XI honors after the prolific campaign.
“What I’m most looking forward to about joining the Battery is having the opportunity to join a club that is eager to compete for a championship,” said Myers. “The team had a great season last year and we’ll be fighting to finish the job at the end of this season.
“My first impression of the team is that it’s a quality group of guys that are very skilled and competitive. There is a strong environment built among the squad and staff and that energy is contagious.”
The 22-year-old was clinical throughout the 2023 season, notching braces against Toronto FC II, Huntsville City FC, Columbus Crew 2, and Orlando City B, and a hat trick against Inter Miami CF II. He boasted an average of one goal involvement every 102 minutes and was named the league’s Co-Player of the Month for August.
Head Coach Ben Pirmann is enthusiastic about bringing aboard Myers.
“MD is an exciting center forward, he’s physical and relentless in his pursuit, and is a nightmare to play against,” said Coach Pirmann. “He has shown his abilities throughout college and the professional ranks that he not only scores goals, but that he is a winner. He is joining a group of players bound by a common goal, to do whatever it takes to win.”
Myers was selected 66th overall by New York City FC following a standout college career at High Point University and Rutgers University.
At High Point, Myers’ career included being the regular season co-leading scorer in Division I soccer (2020) and numerous All-Big South honors. With the Scarlet Knights, Myers was the Unanimous Big Ten Player of the Year (2022) along with several All-Big Ten accolades.
The Delran, N.J., native competed for USL League Two side Ocean City Nor’easters during the 2021 and 2022 seasons while in school. Myers also played for Philadelphia Union’s academy prior to his collegiate career.
The acquisition of Myers marks the fourth transfer market transaction of the offseason for the Battery.
Myers is ready for the jump up to the USL Championship and to make an impact in the Lowcountry.
“My mindset transitioning from MLS NEXT Pro to the Championship is to just stay consistent and stick to what has worked for me in the past,” said Myers. “I know how to get into good positions, score goals, and work hard for my team, and I look to carry all of that to the USL.”
