Matchday Preview
The Charleston Battery have a quick turnaround between matches and head to Florida to face Miami FC on Wed., June 18. Kickoff at Pitbull Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET, and the match will broadcast on ESPN+ (streaming) and SiriusXM FC (radio).
Charleston and Miami clash for the first time this season after not previously meeting in 2025.
The Battery (9W-2L-1D, 28pts) visit South Florida following their 1-2 road win over Hartford Athletic in Week 15 of the USL Championship. MD Myers opened the scoring in the 7th minute, and Houssou Landry’s strike in the 50th minute proved to be the match-winner after Hartford attempted to stage a late comeback. The win was Charleston’s fourth away triumph of the league campaign.
Miami (4W-6L-1D, 13pts) return home after being dealt a 2-1 road loss against the Tampa Bay Rowdies last Saturday. The South Florida side grabbed a 0-1 lead right before halftime via Francisco Bonfiglio. But, a pair of goals from Tampa Bay in the second half swayed the result in their favor.
Looking at the Eastern Conference standings, Charleston are in second and Miami are in ninth.
Storylines of the Match
Quick Turnaround, Busy Week – For the third time this year, the Battery face a demanding stretch of three matches in just seven days. After Saturday’s trip to Hartford, the squad’s schedule has them returning home briefly before flying out to Miami midweek. Then, the Battery will return home from South Florida for another quick turnaround to host Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday.
First Miami Clash of 2025 – Charleston return to Miami with confidence amid a nine-game unbeaten streak in league play, but the confines of Pitbull Stadium have been unfriendly to the Black and Yellow, historically. The Battery secured their first-ever win at Miami last year after going 0W-3L-3D in the previous six meetings in Florida.
All-Time vs. Miami – The Battery trail slightly in the all-time series against Miami, holding a 5W-6L-3D record against the Florida club dating back to 2020. However, the Battery swept the series last year with a pair of wins and will hope to keep that streak going this week.
Top Scorers vs. Top Goalkeeper – It will be a test of strengths when Charleston’s attack and Miami’s defense, namely in the goalkeeping department, meet. Cal Jennings (11 goals) and MD Myers (seven) are the league’s best 1-2 attacking combo. In their way, however, is Miami’s Bill Hamid, who has the second-most saves per match in the league and is tied for the eighth-most saves overall.
Scoring Streak Continues – The Battery’s offense has been firing on all cylinders in league play this year. So much so, that the team has scored in 17 consecutive games in the Championship, their longest streak since 2017.
Nine In A Row – Charleston enter Wednesday on a nine-game unbeaten run in Championship play. Since their last league loss on March 29, the Battery have amassed eight wins and one draw in league play. It is the second-longest active streak in the league.
Myers Scores Double Digits – With a goal on Saturday in Hartford, MD Myers became the second Battery player to hit double digits this season. His tally against Hartford was goal No. 10 through 13 appearances across all competitions. Additionally, his seven goals rank tied for fourth overall in the Championship.
Martínez Nears 150 – Douglas Martínez is closing in on the career milestone of 150 USL Championship regular season appearances. Martinez has 149 matches to his name going into Wednesday.
Jennings Approaches Milestone – Cal Jennings is also nearing a personal milestone, 10,000 career minutes played in the USL Championship regular season. The striker is currently at 9,909 minutes played.
Rubín at Gold Cup – Rubio Rubín is still out on international duty after being called up to represent Guatemala during the June FIFA International Window. Los Chapines will begin their Concacaf Gold Cup campaign on Monday against Jamaica. Rubín has been a fixture for Guatemala since his debut in 2022, recording 11 goals and 31 caps for Los Chapines heading into the Gold Cup.
