The Charleston Battery are excited to announce the signing of Charleston native Charlie Dennis to a USL Academy contract on Saturday, pending league and federation approval. The Academy contract will allow Dennis to gain valuable experience at the professional level while still preserving his college soccer eligibility.
The midfielder enters his second season with the Battery under an Academy contract after being with the club during the 2023 season.
Dennis made his professional debut on April 4, 2023, in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Second Round against Savannah Clovers FC. He was additionally included on the bench in four USL Championship matches.
“I’m really excited to be back for the 2024 season, last year was awesome and we had a great group of guys,” said Dennis. “We’re working hard every day and I can’t wait to see the fans at Patriots Point. Charleston is an incredible city, it’s awesome to be able to continue to represent my hometown club again.
“To play at this level is honestly a dream, I know being here has helped me immensely as a player. It’s rewarding to be around so many professionals, you learn a lot more about the game and a lot more about life at the same time. Making these friendships has helped me grow on and off the pitch.”
Dennis, 19, grew up in Charleston, attending Battery matches and even being the club’s ball boy during games in the early 2010s.
Dennis is a recent graduate of Oceanside Collegiate Academy in Mount Pleasant. He captained Oceanside during his senior year in 2022 and was a state champion in his freshman year in 2018. Outside of high school, he played for local development team SC Surf Soccer Club and South Georgia Tormenta FC’s academy side in MLS Next.
Dennis will wear the number 32 and is available for selection against New Mexico United on March 23.
