Carolina Challenge Cup Update plus Mayard scores for Impact in Portugal
Charleston, SC. With the Carolina Challenge Cup just two weeks away all four sides in the tournament have been busy preparing for the start of the season. All three MLS teams had players involved in last week’s international friendly as the US beat El Salvador. Meanwhile Montreal Impact midfielder Pierre-Rudolph Mayard who is set to join the Battery on a season-long loan scored for the Impact in a mid-week game in Portugal. RSL snapped up U.S. Under-20 midfielder Luis Gil via a trade with the Kansas City Wizards this week and Toronto FC’s pre-season unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls.

Battery midfielder Mayard scores in match versus Freamunde
Montreal Impact midfielder Pierre-Rudolph Mayard notched a goal versus Portuguese second division side Sport Clube Freamunde in a pre-season match played last Wednesday. Mayard, who will join the Battery on a season long loan beginning in March scored for Montreal in the 78th minute in a game played at the Estadio Sport Clube Freamunde, Portugal. The Impact is on a three-game pre-season tour of Italy they return on March 5.

US men’s national team players in Carolina Challenge Cup
DC United’s Troy Perkins and Chris Pontius, Real Salt Lakes Kyle Beckerman, Robbie Findlay and Nick Rimando plus Toronto FC’s Marvell Wynne were all were part of Bob Bradley’s squad that defeated El Salvador by a score of two goals to one last Wednesday Night. Salt Lake’s Robbie Findlay has also been called into the squad for the USA’s March 3 match versus Holland to be played in the Netherlands. The game versus Holland features almost exclusively European based players.

Real Salt Lake acquires U.S. Under-20 midfielder Luis Gil
Real Salt has signed U.S. Under-20 midfielder Luis Gil via a trade with the Kansas City Wizards. The defending MLS Cup Champions acquired U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team midfielder Luis Gil from the Wizards in return for RSL's second round selection in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, an International Player roster slot, and 25 percent of any future transfer fee received by RSL for Gil from a club outside MLS. Kansas City acquired the 16-year-old midfielder in a weighted lottery held by MLS.

Toronto FC unbeaten streak snapped
Toronto FC's unbeaten run in preseason came to an end when they were beaten 4-0 by the New York Red Bulls in the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic on Saturday night. Juan Pablo Angel scored a hat-trick and to add to Toronto's misery, Julian de Guzman was sent off for a second half foul on the Colombian striker. It is the second match in a row that the Reds have played a man down following Nick Garcia's sending off in the 1-0 win over FC Dallas last Thursday.

TFC head coach Preki fielded three trialists in the Toronto starting line-up including right back Dan Gargan who has played in every game of preseason so far. Serbian Kosta Bajic and Nigerian Peter Ijeh started in attack.

Carolina Challenge Cup tickets
The Charleston Battery kicks off 2010 with a pre-season tournament featuring MLS champions Real Salt Lake March 13 – 20 at Blackbaud Stadium. DC United and Toronto FC also make return visits to the round-robin tournament. All three MLS teams will spend the week in Charleston, SC, training between the games as they prepare for the start of the Major League Soccer season.
