Battery tops College of Charleston in pre-season scrimmage
Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the College of Charleston Tuesday afternoon by a score of two goals to one in its first pre-season scrimmage of 2006. Troy Lesesne converted a free-kick in the third period of play to lift the Battery over the Cougars. The scrimmage featured three extended periods as both sides made several line-changes during the match.
The Battery opened the scoring in the first period though an Alon Lubezky headed goal. Midfielder Luke Vercollone slipped past his defender on the right side and whipped a ball to the back post. Lubezky met the cross and snapped a header past Cougar 'keeper Corbin Waller and into the goal.
Cougar forward Jeremy Gold leveled for the College in the second period from a free-kick after he was fouled just outside the box by defender Drew Cavanagh. Gold swept the ball around the wall and into the right corner of the goal.
Former Cougar Troy Lesesne scored the Battery’s second, and the game-winner, in the third period; Lesesne bent a left-footed free-kick into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal from twenty-yards out.
Next up for the Battery is a 6 PM match on Saturday versus Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo at Blackbaud Stadium. The game is the first of the 2006 Carolina Challenge Cup; DC United takes on Red Bull New York in the second game of the double-header at 8:15 PM.

The Charleston Battery will host the third annual Carolina Challenge Cup March 18 – 25 at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island. The 2006 pre-season tournament will feature 2004 MLS Cup Champions DC United, Major League Soccer's Red-Bull New York, the Houston Dynamo and the USL First Division Charleston Battery.
DC United's 16-year old soccer sensation Freddy Adu is expected to make a return visit to the tournament. Tickets are on sale now priced at $15 – $25; discounts are available for series tickets (includes all 6 games) and for 2006 Charleston Battery season ticket holders.
