Charleston Battery adds four
Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery has agreed to terms with four new players for the 2006 USL First Division season. Midfielder Luke Vercollone arrives in Charleston after spending the last two years with Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution, defender Chris Corcoran joins the Battery after spending the 2005 season with MLS’s MetroStars, Jeff Matteo comes to the Battery from USL 1 rival, the Minnesota Thunder, and Turks and Caicos national team forward Gavin Glinton also signs after impressing during pre-season.

"We have been fortunate to sign four solid professionals in Gavin, Jeff, Luke and Chris which solidifies our roster up-front in the midfield and the back. All four performed very well during the Carolina Challenge and I look forward to all of them contributing to a successful 2006 campaign."

Luke Vercollone
Luke Vercollone, 24, joins the Battery after spending the last two years with Major League Soccer's New England Revolution. A native of Pembroke, MA, Vercollone played five games for the Revolution after signing as a developmental player in 2004.

Vercollone, 5-10, 150 lbs., has prior experience in the USL with the Cape Cod Crusaders of the PDL. Vercollone won two PDL championships with Cape Cod (2002, 2003), he played 23 games in two years, scored nine goals and added 10 assists.

Vercollone was a four-year starter at Seton Hall, he finished his college career with 46 points (fifth all-time – 11 goals & 24 assists).

Chris Corcoran
Chris Corcoran, 23, arrives in Charleston after spending his rookie pro-season with MLS's MetroStars in 2005. Corcoran was selected by the MetroStars in the third round (25th overall) of the 2005 MLS SuperDraft but saw limited action in season plagued with injury.

Prior to turning pro Corcoran, 5-9, 165 lbs., was a stand-out at St Johns University; he played 75 games, starting 72 times, finishing with 12 goals and 11 assists for 35 points.

A native of Weymouth MA, Corcoran was a member of the PDL Cape Cod Crusaders in 2002 and the Brooklyn Knights in 2003.

Jeff Matteo
The Charleston Battery has signed midfielder Jeff Matteo for the 2006 USL First Division soccer season. Matteo, 25, joins the Battery after spending the last two years with the Minnesota Thunder. Matteo's two-year totals with the Thunder include 51 games played, five goals and seven assists.

Matteo, 5-6, 155 lbs, 26 yrs, began his pro career in 2002 with Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew. The Stormville, NY native also played for MLS's MetroStars and had a short stint with Italian third division club (Serie C1) Monza. Before turning pro Matteo was a four year starter at St John's University

Matteo also played three seasons with the Westchester Flames in the PDL, registering seven goals and five assists. He helped guide the team to a PDL championship in 2001.


Gavin Glinton
Forward Gavin Glinton joins the Battery for the 2006 USL First Division season. The Bradley University product was drafted by Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy in 2002 before transferring to the Dallas Burn in 2003. His two-year totals include 44 games played with one goal and 4 assists.

A native of Brentwood, CA, Glinton, 26, is a member of the Turks & Caicos men's national team. Glinton took a two year break from pro-soccer in 2004 & 2005 while serving as an assistant coach at Bradley University. Prior to turning pro Glinton had a standout season with the PDL, Chicago Fire Premier in 2001, tallying 13 goals and two assists in 12 games

Battery midfielder Omar Daley called up by Jamaican national team
Charleston Battery midfielder, Omar Daley, has been called in to the Jamaican men's national team squad for the USA vs Jamaica match on Tuesday, April 11 (ESPN 2, 7PM). Daley was signed by the Battery last week from Jamaican Premier League side, Portmore United.

Daley, 5-10, 170 lbs., 25 yrs joined the Jamaican squad in Cary, NC on Sunday he will return to Charleston on Wednesday following the game. Daley has 20 caps for Jamaica and has scored 9 goals.

Charleston Battery vs Village United – Saturday, April 15, 7:30 PM
The Charleston Battery will play the Wray & Nephew Jamaican Premier League side Village United in a pre-season exhibition this Saturday, April 15 at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. The Battery has signed Village United & Jamaican men's national team defender, Shane Crawford; Crawford will play for the Charleston Battery in the international exhibition.
