Battery vs Eagles
Charleston, SC - The A-League Charleston Battery host the PSL Charlotte Eagles Saturday at Blackbaud Stadium, in the final game of the Battery's 2004 pre-season schedule; admission is free for this match, kick off is set for 2 PM. There will be a concession stand open at Blackbaud Stadium during Saturday's game.
The match vs the Eagles wraps up a tough pre-season schedule for Charleston that included the inaugural Carolina Challenge Cup which featured Major League Soccer's DC United, Columbus Crew and the current PSL champions, the Wilmington Hammerheads.
The Charlotte Eagles competed in the A-League from 2001 - 2003 after winning the D3 crown in 2000. In 2003 the Charleston Battery played Charlotte four times winning twice, with a loss and a tie. The Charlotte Charleston rivalry extends back 12 years; both teams were formed in 1993. The Battery defeated the Eagles in the 1996 Pro League final to win its first National Championship.
The Charleston Battery opens the defense of its 2003 A-League Championship on the road April 17 vs the Richmond Kickers. The 2004 Home Opener is set for Saturday, April 24 at Blackbaud Stadium also vs Richmond; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
Charleston Battery signs veteran defender Ivan McKinley
The Charleston Battery has agreed to terms with veteran defender Ivan McKinley. McKinley joins the Battery after missing the 2003 season through injury. A native of South Africa, McKinley is a seven-year veteran of Major League Soccer, joining the league in its inception after being drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny in the fourth round of the MLS Inaugural Draft in 1996.
McKinley played for four MLS sides: Tampa Bay (1996-97), New England (1997-2000), Miami Fusion (2000-01) and DC United (2002). McKinley played in 184 matches in his MLS career and was named to the starting eleven for all but nine of those contests. McKinley has made three appearances for the South African Men's National team. McKinley has been in camp for the past two-weeks and saw action for Charleston in the 2004 Carolina Challenge Cup.
The Battery has also signed rookie midfielder, Jason Getz. A native of Plainfield, VT, Getz 6-2, 170 began his college career at Lander University before transferring to Clemson University.
