Battery to play MLS’s FC Dallas in US Open Cup Quarterfinal
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery (USL1) will square off against FC Dallas (MLS) in the quarterfinal round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open; the game will be played at Blackbaud Stadium on Tuesday, August 7, gates open at 6:30 PM kick off is set for 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com). The Battery advanced to the last eight of US Soccer’s National Championship with a 1-0 win versus MLS’s Houston Dynamo. Dallas progressed with a penalty-shootout win over the Atlanta Silverbacks.
The Charleston Battery began its 2007 Open Cup campaign with a 3-0 win versus the Central Florida Kraze (PDL) on June 12. Charleston then defeated the El Paso Patriots by a score of one goal to none on June 26 in the second round; both games were played at Blackbaud Stadium
The Battery defeated the Houston Dynamo 1-0 in the third round in a game played at Blackbaud Stadium on July 10. Midfielder, Stephen Armstrong scored the only goal of the game from the penalty-spot in the 108th minute.
The August 7th game versus FC Dallas is a re-match of last years US Open Cup fourth round fixture. That game finished tied 3-3 after OT; FC Dallas advanced after a penalty-shootout; Dallas striker Kenny Cooper scored a hat-trick in the match. FC Dallas in currently in second position in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference but does not play a league game again until August 4 due to commitments with the SuperLiga tournament.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.

Karalexis named to USL First Division Team of the Week
Charleston Battery defender Tim Karalexis has been named to the USL First Division Team of the Week following the Battery’s 2-0 win versus the Portland Timbers last Sunday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Karalexis anchored the Battery defense as Charleston ended Portland’s seven game win streak.
