Courage vs Power
Charleston, SC. The WUSA Champion Carolina Courage will play the New York Power in a Women’s United Soccer Association exhibition match at Blackbaud Stadium this Saturday afternoon; kick off is set for 3:00 pm. This marks the first time that a WUSA match has been held in Charleston.

Charleston Battery President Nigel Cooper,

“Obviously we are thrilled to bring this game to Blackbaud Stadium and to soccer fans here in Charleston. WUSA has been a tremendous success in its first two seasons and we are proud to bring these two teams to our stadium. We’re doubly proud to be bringing the reigning WUSA Champions in for the game; this will be a marvelous event”.

The Carolina Courage enjoyed an impressive 2002 campaign finishing the regular season in first position with a record of 12-5-1, 40 points. On August 24, the Courage defeated the Washington Freedom by a score of three goals to two, to win the Founders Cup II.

The Courage and the Powers’ rosters feature an array of the best Women’s soccer players in the world. Combined, there are no fewer than seven members of the US Women’s National Team playing for the two sides.

The Courage roster is led by US Women’s National Team defender, Carla Overbeck. Also from the US Women’s National Team are Danielle Fotopoulos, Tiffany Roberts and Danielle Slaton.

Carolina Courage, Club Captain Carla Overbeck is one of the most capped players in the history of the U.S. Women's National Team. She captained the 1999 World Cup Champion, the 1996 Olympic gold medal winning, and the 1995 World Cup bronze medal-winning U.S. National Teams.

US Forward, Danielle Fotopoulos was a member of the gold medal-winning 1999 World Cup Champion U.S. Team. She has scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for the United States.

New York Power’s roster is headed up by US Women’s National Team player Sara Whalen. It also includes Norwegian Internationals, Linda Ormen and Anita Rapp, Finnish National Team player, Minna Mustonen and Chinese National Team goalkeeper, Gao Hong.

Norwegian midfielder Anita Rapp has appeared 37 times for her National side, scoring five goals. Rapp was a member of the Norwegian National Team that won the gold medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Chinese goalkeeper Gao Hong has been a mainstay in the net for China for over a decade. She joined the National Team in 1989 and has led China to gold medals in the 1993, 1995 and 1997 Asian Women's Championship.
