Charleston Battery President Nigel Cooper to step down
Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery President Nigel Cooper will step down from the role he has held since 1999 effective August 2007. Cooper is moving with his family from Charleston to Argentina. In addition to serving as Charleston Battery President, Cooper was instrumental in the founding of the Charleston Battery and has been a key member of the ownership group from the franchise’s 1993 inception.

Charleston Battery CEO, Tony Bakker,

“Nigel Cooper has been an excellent leader for the Charleston Battery for the past 8 years. The success that the franchise has enjoyed both on and off the field during his tenure, including the 2003 National Championship, is a reflection of his outstanding efforts. I’m sorry to see him go but I’m also excited for him, Kate and the children; it’s a wonderful opportunity for them and I wish them all the best in their endeavors.”

Charleston Battery President, Nigel Cooper,

“My family and I fell in love with Argentina some time ago and we very much enjoy the country and the culture. We have property and business interests in a winery currently under development. We want our children to be exposed to a different culture and community while learning another language. I still expect to be involved with the Battery by furthering the relationships that we have initiated with clubs and agents down there. We will truly miss the tremendous group of friends that we have made over the past 18 years. We will be back in Charleston from time to time because we will always consider the city home.”

Cooper steered the Charleston Battery to the 2003 USL First Division Championship in 2003. Under Cooper’s leadership the Battery has also twice reached the semi-final stage of the US Open Cup (1999 & 2004). In addition, Cooper was instrumental in bringing the Carolina Challenge Cup to Charleston; the Battery’s annual Major League Soccer invitation pre-season tournament.

Cooper has several business interests in Argentina and has been a regular visitor over the past few years. In February 2007 Cooper accompanied Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser on a trip that successfully established links with several Argentinean soccer clubs.
