Thursday, July 3, 2003 - Charleston, SC Battery Ties Riverhounds
Remains Atop The Southeast Division Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery tied 0-0 with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,747. The Battery out-shot the Riverhounds 14-8 but could not break through with a winning goal. Charleston improves to 10-2-3, 33 points and remains in 1st place in the Southeast Division. Pittsburgh improves to 5-6-4, 19 points, 5th place in the Northeast Division.
Both teams had chances in the first half. Pittsburgh striker, Alexy Korol headed a Gary DePalma cross wide in the 14th minute. Then in the 20th, defender Michael Green also headed wide, this time from a corner kick.
In the 40th minute, Battery midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos hit a hard shot goalward from just outside the box. The ball struck a defender on the way through and it deflected just to the right of the goal.
In the 47th minute, Chronopoulos had a second opportunity. This time his effort was parried wide of the goal by Riverhounds defender, Matt Chulis.
Pittsburgh forced two good saves from Charleston goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock midway through the second half. In the 52nd minute he blocked a shot from midfielder, Ricardo Villar. A minute later he smothered a point-blank attempt from Korol.
In the 89th minute Battery substitute striker, Seamus Donnelly ripped a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box. Pittsburgh goalkeeper, Randy Dedini was well-positioned and made a solid save.
In overtime Charleston came closest to winning the game but substitute, midfielder, Chris Goos’s 92nd minute drive was spectacularly tipped over the crossbar by Dedini.
The Charleston Battery heads to Virginia Beach Saturday for a match with its Southeast Division rival, the Mariners. Kick off is set for 7:30 pm (WTMZ 910 AM / www.charlestonbattery.com).
