Extends Win Streak To Four Charlotte NC. The Charleston Battery defeated its Southeast Division rivals the Charlotte Eagles tonight at Providence High School Field by a score of one goal to none. The victory extends the Battery winning streak to four as they remain atop the Division with a maximum 12 points. Charlotte drops to 0-4 and remains in bottom place.
The Battery dominated the first half outshooting the Eagles 8 to 2. Midfielder, Ted Chronopoulos tested Eagles goalkeeper, Dwayne Adams in the 14th minute but his sharp half-volley was saved well as Adams dived to his right.
Two minutes later forward Josh Henderson received a flick-on inside the 18-yard box from his strike partner Paul Conway. As the ball reached him he spun to his left and rifled a shot high over the target.
The Battery finally broke through in the 29th minute. The ball was thrown in from the right touch-line deep into the Charlotte penalty-area. Jackson met the throw at the goal line and directed a header back to Chronopoulos in the goal-mouth. With Adams stranded at the side of his goal, Chronopoulos drove the ball home; it was his first goal as a Charleston Battery player.
Charleston was unfortunate not to double its lead in the 41st minute. Midfielder Ryan Trout had a shot expertly saved by Adams from point-blank range after midfielder, Barry Moore had slipped a neat pass through to him.
After the break in the 52nd minute, Charlotte midfielder Nate Watkins had a chance, however his shot from just outside the box missed wide right.
In the 69th minute Josh Henderson received the ball with his back to goal at the edge of the penalty area. He managed to hold off his marker and get a shot off but it was saved by Adams diving to his right.
Charlotte pressed hard in the latter stages but could not break through as Charleston goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock, recorded his third shutout of the season.
Both teams return to Charleston today for the second game of the weekend double-header. Kick off is set for 7:30 pm at Blackbaud Stadium. Its Jersey night and the first 500 children through the turnstiles will receive a free replica Battery warm-up jersey. In addition, all military personnel get in free to the game with a military ID.
