Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Montreal Impact tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of one goal to none in front of 4813. A Paul Conway penalty kick in the 43rd minute was the difference between the sides. Charleston improves to 2-0, 6 points and first place in the Southeast Division. Montreal drops to 0-1.
Montreal started brightly and had a couple of chances early on. Forward, Edwuardo Sebrango headed wide in the 9th minute. Shortly afterwards midfielder Patrick Leduc had a hard shot blocked by one of his own players, forward, Mauro Biello.
Charleston also threatened with forwards Chris Bagley and Paul Conway working well together up-top. Conway volleyed an Andrew Lewis cross in the 36th minute but Impact keeper Gregg Sutton, gathered up the shot.
Just before the half Conway earned the penalty that would win Charleston the game. Montreal failed to properly clear a Battery corner and Andrew Lewis headed the ball back into the box. Conway managed to control it and as he spun towards goal he was fouled. Ignoring the Montreal protests he sent Sutton the wrong way and tucked the ball into the left-hand corner of the goal.
After the break both sides attacked. Montreal midfielder, David Frominadis forced a save from Goalkeeper Dusty Hudock in the 61st minute.
In the 68th minute substitute defender, David Lara headed wide after Ryan Trout whipped in a dangerous free-kick.
Montreal was forced to finish the game with ten men after defender, Jason Ditullio fouled Battery left-back Terry Phelan. The final score, Charleston Battery 1- Montreal Impact 0.
