DC Edges Battery 1-0 United wins pre-season exhibition with a Quintanilla goal
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery lost to Major League Soccer’s DC United tonight by a score of 1-0 at Blackbaud Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,288. Eliseo Quintanilla scored the winning goal in the 62nd minute slotting the ball past Battery keeper Dusty Hudock after some neat interplay. The match was a pre-season exhibition; Charleston’s A-League campaign begins April 19th on the road versus Richmond.

The Battery started the match brightly and almost scored inside the first 5 minutes. Midfielder Ted Chronopoulos fired a fierce shot on target from inside the 18-yard box, forcing a diving save from United goalkeeper, Nick Rimando

In the 19th minute midfielder Seamus Donnelly hit a shot that was blocked inside the box. The ball had been parried to him at the edge of the penalty area from a Chronopoulos corner-kick.

Probably the best move of the half came in the 35th minute. Winger, Blair Scoullar made a strong run down the right flank. As he drew level with the 18-yard box he whipped a cross towards the back post. Forward Paul Conway ran onto the pass but his half-volley flew just high.

The United goal game midway though the second period, Marco Etcheverry combined with US National Team midfielder Ben Olsen inside the Battery half. He then slotted the ball through Charleston’s defense to an on-running Eliseo Quintanilla. Quintanilla took the ball in stride and pushed it past Dusty Hudock for the goal.

After the goal the Battery pressed hard but could not break down, DC’s defense. The final score, Charleston Battery 0 – DC United 1
