Justin Evans Named A-League Player of the Week
Greenville SC. – The A-League Charleston Battery defeated the D3 Greenville Lions tonight by a score of three goals to none in an US Open Cup second round match. With the win the Battery advances to the third round of the competition where it will host Major League Soccer’s, Colorado Rapids. That game is set for 7:30 pm, Wednesday, July 17 at Blackbaud Stadium. The Rapids are coached by former Charleston Battery Head Coach, Tim Hankinson.
Charleston dominated the game from start to finish, but Greenville held the Battery scoreless until the 58th minute. Substitute forward, Raul Diaz Arce flicked a through-ball on to fellow striker Steve Klein. Klein surged past his marker, latched onto the ball and drilled it past Lions keeper, Jukka Masalin for the first goal.
Three minutes later Charleston doubled its lead. The ball was crossed sharply into the middle of the penalty area. Midfielder Justin Evans met the pass and headed the ball goalward. It struck the cross-bar and careened back into play. Midfielder John Jones was following up on the play and he swept the rebound into the back of the net.
In the 68th minute the Battery killed the game off with a third goal. The ball was passed forward through the center of the Greenville defense. Klein rose to meet the pass and deftly turned it into Diaz Arce’s path. The El Salvador native cut into the box and lashed it past Masalin, and into the goal.
In all Charleston out-shot Greenville 14-3. Goalkeeper, Todd Hoffard earned the shut-out victory without recording a save; it was his first start of the 2002 season. This is the fourth year in succession that the Battery has qualified for the Us Open Cup and the second year in a row that it has reached the third round. In 1999 Charleston advances to the semifinal of the Cup where it lost to the Colorado Rapids.
Justin Evans Named A-League Player of the Week Midfielder, Justin Evans has been named as the A-League Player of the Week following his two-goal performance last Friday vs. Atlanta. Evans hit the target twice, his second goal, the game winner was scored in OT.
Battery @ Montreal Impact 06/28/02 The Charleston Battery heads to Canada Friday night for a 7:30 pm match with the A-League Northeast Division Montreal Impact (WTMZ 910 AM). It is the second game between the two teams in the 2002 season. The Battery defeated the Impact by one goal to none at Blackbaud Stadium back on May 4.
