Montreal beats Battery
Montreal, Canada. The Charleston Battery fell to the Montreal Impact by a score of one goal to nil Friday night in Montreal in front of 13,143. Striker Rocco Placentino scored the lone goal, blasting a shot past goalkeeper Dusty Hudock in the 70th minute. The game was a bad-tempered affair particularly in the second half, and both sides finished the game with only ten men after Randi Patterson and Adam Braz were ejected in the 88th minute for a scuffle in the box.

There was a moment of controversy in just the 10th minute after Impact midfielder Pat Leduc appeared to have scored with a fierce shot from twenty yards out. The ball struck the crossbar and looked to bounce from behind the line back into play. Dusty Hudock gathered up the loose ball and referee Justin Tasev waived away the Montreal players as they appealed for the goal

The Battery enjoyed their best spell of possession during the middle portion of the first half and came close in the 16th minute as Ian Fuller ran in on goal. Fuller shot from point-blank range as the ball reached him but was denied by Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan.

Ten minutes later Jordan again saved his side making an excellent parried stop to deny Randi Patterson’s headed effort from ten yards out.

After the break Montreal took control of the game and were rewarded for their efforts in the 70th minute. Rocco Placentino received the ball on the right side and lashed a left-footed dipping shot over Dusty Hudock’s out-stretched hand and into the goal from twenty-three yards out.

The goal brought game to life as the Battery pressed forward looking for an equalizer. Following a Battery attacking free-kick Patterson tangled with defender Adam Braz and both players grappled on the ground as play continued. The referee was left with no choice and showed both a red-card.

Charleston had one last chance to tie it in the 90th minute as substitute forward Aaron King burst into space on the right side of the box. King fired a low shot at the goal but Jordan was well positioned and dropped to his left to make the save.

Next up for the Battery is a game on FOX Soccer Channel next Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium versus the Minnesota Thunder; gates open at 6:00 PM with kick off set for 8:00 PM ($5 - $15, 971-GOAL / www.charlestonbattery.com).
