Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - Charleston, SC Spicer hat-trick lifts Battery over ASC New Stars Charleston, SC. Darren Spicer scored a first-half hat-trick to lead Charleston to a 3-0 victory versus the ASC New Stars Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 1,401. The game was a first round US Open Cup fixture, the Battery advance to the second round where they will face either the Charlotte Eagles (USL2) or the Clearwater Galactics (USASA) (Tuesday, June 24, Blackbaud Stadium 7:30 PM).
ASC almost took a shock lead in the 12th minute of the game after a neat through ball from Esteban Lotero to the lone striker, Alex Bolan. Bolan beat the Battery defender to the ball but his left-footed strike missed wide right.
Spicer opened the scoring five minutes later following a strong run down the left flank by winger David Kenga. Kenga floated a cross to an unmarked Spicer at the back-post who nodded the ball home.
Charleston doubled its advantage in the 27th minute but this time it was forward, Aaron King who caused the problems. King burst to the bye-line then flicked the ball square with the outside of his boot. Spicer was waiting in the middle of the goal and headed the ball down and in.
Just before half-time the Battery effectively put the game out of reach with a third goal. King crossed the ball from the right side and the New Stars could only parry it clear. Spicer latched onto the loose ball ten yards out and buried his shot past goalkeeper Emilio Frias.
Next up for the Battery is a Friday night visit to Montreal for a 7:30 Pm match versus the Impact (REAL 1340 AM / USLLive.com).
