Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Sonoma County Sol 1-0 tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 1,302. The game was an US Open Cup Second Round fixture, the Battery advances to face the Portland Timbers in the Third Round, Wednesday, July 12 at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.

The first real chance of the game came in the 21st minute after Sonoma County conceded a free-kick just outside the penalty-area. Midfielder Jeff Matteo curled a shot around the wall but Sol goalkeeper Derek Shaffer made a diving save.

In the 36th minute winger Armando Romero broke a tackle on the left side of the box. He dribbled past a second defender then fired a shot at goal that Shaffer just managed to turn around the post for a corner.

In the 48th minute Sonoma County created a chance as the ball was played up to forward Tony Bussard at the edge of the 18-yard box. Bussard turned to his right and fired a first-time shot that missed wide left.

A minute later the Battery scored the goal that would decide the game after earning a corner-kick. Defender Ben Hollingsworth ran onto Troy Lesesne’s whipped cross at the back post and snapped a header past Sol goalkeeper Derek Shaffer.

Sonoma County pushed forward to try and get back into the game; midfielder Michael Brinceno caused some problems down the left-side but missed the target twice after creating space to shoot at goal.

The final opportunity of the game fell to the Battery just before full-time as Lesesne wriggled past his marker and got in behind the Sol defense. He slipped a pass to forward Jordie Hughes at the near-post but Hughes' attempt flew wide.
