Lubezky scores late winner to lift Charleston over Portland
Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Portland Timbers by a score of one goal to none tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 4,097. Substitute forward Alon Lubezky scored in the 88th minute to lift the Battery over the Timbers. Charleston improves to 8-13-5, 29 points good for 7th position in the USL First Division; Portland drops to 7-8-8, 9th place.

Charleston had two early chances but did not test Timbers goalkeeper Josh Saunders as Evans shot wide in the 5th minute then Martinez lifted an attempt over the bar in the 13th.

In the 26th minute former Charleston forward Paul Conway flicked a header on-target but Battery goalkeeper Chris Doyle was well-positioned and made the save.

Just after half-time Jesus Martinez broke free down the left side. He drove a low cross into the box looking for forward, Ben Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth threw himself at the ball but just missed making contact as it flashed across the face of the goal.

Hollingsworth was involved again in the 61st minute with some neat combination play alongside Usiel Vasquez. Hollingsworth's final pass put Vasquez through but his hard driven shot missed the goal wide right.

Conway came close for the Timbers a couple of minutes later but was denied by Doyle from inside the six yard box.

The Battery scored the game winner in the 88th minute as substitute forward Greg Simmonds launched a deep diagonal cross from the right side. Lubezky timed his run to perfection and latched onto the ball at the back post before firing past Saunders and into the goal.
