Battery held scoreless by Mariners
Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery tied 0-0 with the Virginia Beach Mariners tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,677. Charleston goalkeeper Chris Doyle saved a penalty-kick attempt by the Mariners in the first half as he earned his 3rd shutout of the season.

The Battery improves to 7-11-4, 25 points and moves into a tie for 6th position with the Puerto Rico Islanders. The Mariners move up to a tie for 10th position with a record of 5-11-6, 20 points.

Charleston started brightly and midfielder Ted Chronopoulos came close in the 15th minute. Forward Alon Lubezky slotted a pass through to Chronopoulos at the edge of the box but his right-footed attempt missed wide left.

The Mariners were awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute after Ben Hollingsworth was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Hamisi Amani-Dove shot on-frame but Doyle made the stop falling to his right.

At the stroke of half-time Battery skipper Justin Evans created some space at the edge of the box but his driven shot skipped past the goal.

The Battery's best opportunity came in the 51st minute after a corner-kick was not fully cleared by the Mariners. Hollingsworth was first to react to the loose ball but his shot was saved off the line by a Mariners defender.

There were two more chances in regulation. John Barry Nusum forced a save by Doyle in the 68th minute and late in the game Lazo Alavanja just failed to connect with a Jesus Martinez cross inside the six yard box.
