Wednesday, June 29, 2005 - Des Moines Menace,
Battery knocked out of Open Cup by Menace
Waukee, IW. The Charleston Battery's 2005 US Open Cup campaign ended tonight at Waukee Stadium as the Battery lost to the Des Moines Menace by a score of three goals to two. Charleston came back from two goals down to tie the game in the 65th minute, but Menace substitute Armin Mujdzic headed home in the 81st minute to end the fight-back.

Des Moines opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Midfielder Edwin Disang sprinted down the left side behind the Battery defense with the ball. He played a square ball across the middle to midfielder Tomas Boltnar who tucked it away from ten yards out.

The Menace doubled its lead in the 14th minute as the ball was played in from the right flank. It took a deflection on its way across but forward Michael Kraus kept his eye on the ball and headed past Charleston goalkeeper Chris Doyle at the near post.

In the 15th minute the Battery responded with a counter-attack straight down the middle of the field. Ugo Okoye received the ball thirty yards out, he dribbled past a player before shooting but his effort missed the target wide to the right of the goal.

Charleston's best chance of the first period came in the 32nd minute after a long throw-in from defender Gabe Bernstein. Battery captain Justin Evans met the cross but his header missed just high.

Substitute forward Greg Simmonds gave Charleston hope in the 60th minute. Evans played a short ball into Simmonds who spun to his left then lashed a shot past Des Moines goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum from six yards out.

In the 64th minute midfielder Lazo Alavanja scored Charleston’s second. He received the ball wide on the left and his shot beat Gruenebaum at the near post.

The Battery returns home to Blackbaud Stadium Saturday night for a 7:30 PM match versus three-time USL First Division Champs the Rochester Raging Rhinos.
