Battery silences Thunder to earn first road-win Vasquez strikes in 13th minute, Doyle earns shut-out
St Paul, MN. The Charleston Battery defeated the Minnesota Thunder tonight by a score one goal to none at James Griffin stadium in front of 3,014. Forward Usiel Vasquez scored the lone goal in the 13th minute as the Battery improves to 3-6-2, 11 points, and 10th position in the USL First Division. Minnesota drops to 3-2-4, 13 points and remains in 7th place.

Minnesota had the first chance of the game in the 6th minute after the Battery half-cleared a Thunder corner-kick. Minnesota midfielder Godfrey Tenoff headed the ball at the goal from inside the box but the ball sailed over the bar.

Charleston broke the deadlock in the 13th minute. Defender Tim Karalexis launched a throw-in down the right side for forward Usiel Vasquez. Vasquez read the flight of the ball and managed to turn past his defender as it came over him. He took a touch into the box then fired a hard shot past Minnesota goalkeeper, Joe Warren.

In the 27th minute the Battery came close to tallying again through a Lazo Alavanja free-kick. Alavanja bent his right-footed attempt around the wall but it skimmed off the top of the cross-bar and behind for a goal-kick.

Charleston had a third chance minutes later after midfielder Boyzzz Khumalo got behind the Thunder defense. As Warren approached Khumalo lifted a lob-shot over the goalkeeper but it was just too high, landing on the roof of the net.

After the break the Battery defended well as Minnesota pushed forward looking for a way back into the game. Goalkeeper Chris Doyle was credited with three saves as he recorded his first shut-out of the year.

Next up for the Battery is an 8:00 PM game next Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium versus the first place Richmond Kickers.
