Battery drops second straight
Seattle, WA. The Charleston Battery lost to the Seattle Sounders tonight by a score of one goal to none at Qwest Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,003. Sounders midfielder, Brent Whitfield scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute, firing home from four yards out.

The loss was the second straight for Charleston who fell 1-0 to Portland on Thursday night. The Battery drops to 1-3-2, 5 points but remains in 5th position in the USL First Division. Seattle improves to 1-1-1, 4 points good for 8th spot.

The Battery had the first chance of the game in the 3rd minute as forward Greg Simmonds slipped a header through to his strike-partner Usiel Vasquez just outside the box. Vasquez hit a first-time shot forcing a reaction save from Sounders goalkeeper, Preston Burpo.

At the half-hour mark Seattle midfielder CJ Kloss whipped in a corner from the right side. Midfielder Zach Scott snapped a header at the goal but Charleston goalkeeper Chris Doyle palmed the ball onto the cross-bar to make the save.

Five minutes later Seattle threatened again as the ball was driven over the Battery defense to Brent Whitfield on the right side. Whitfield angled his run into the box but Doyle stormed off his line and smothered the one-on-one with an excellent body-save.

In the 41st minute Whitfield again found space on the right flank. He cut to his left past defender Ted Chronopoulos then fired a shot at the goal. Doyle dove to his left and made a fingertip save, pushing the ball over the bar for a Seattle corner kick.

Seattle finally broke through in the 67th minute. Forward Welton made a strong run down the left side. He played the ball across to Whitfield whose hard right-footed shot was parried by Doyle. The ball dropped back to Whitfield and he powered a shot over Doyle and into the goal.

Next up for the Charleston Battery is a Sunday night game versus the Vancouver Whitecaps at Swanguard Stadium, Vancouver; kick off is set for 10:00 PM EST (WSC 730 AM).
