Battery Tops Mariners Simmonds scores a brace as Charleston withstands a late Virginia Beach rally
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery defeated the Virginia Beach Mariners tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of four goals to three in front of a crowd of 3,302. Forward Greg Simmonds scored twice as the Battery improved to 2-2-1, 7 points, 4th place in the Eastern Conference. With the loss the Mariners drop to 1-2-1, 4 points, 6th in the Conference.

The first goal of the game was not scored until the 45th minute. Midfielder Kevin Jackson whipped a cross in from the left side. Ted Chronopoulos headed the ball back across the box, where forward Wolde Harris redirected it into the goal. It was Harris's first goal for the Battery, scored on his debut.

Charleston doubled its lead in the 50th minute. Chronopoulos sent a ball into the middle where it was flicked to the back-post by Greg Simmonds. Defender Michael Green anticipated the deflection and headed home from 5-yards out.

Virginia Beach pulled a goal back in the 56th minute through midfielder Hamisi Amani Dove. Dove followed up on his own shot and tucked the rebound past a diving Dusty Hudock.

Greg Simmonds scored his first of the night in the 60th minute to restore the Battery's two goal advantage. The Battery was awarded a free-kick just outside the box. Simmonds bent a right-footed shot past Mariners goalkeeper, Matt Nelson from 20 yards out.

Simmonds tallied again in the 71st minute to seemingly put the game beyond doubt. Midfielder Steve Klein headed a Mariners clearance back into the box. Simmonds met the ball as it came through and flicked it into the bottom right-hand corner with neat header.

The Mariners fought back scoring twice in the last 20 minutes. Pato Aguilera converted a PK in the 82nd minute then Charleston conceded an own-goal from a corner-kick in the 86th minute. The final score – Charleston Battery 4 – Virginia Beach Mariners 3.
