Friday, August 1, 2003, 8:00PM EDT Battery to Battle Richmond Live on FOX Sports World
Charleston SC. The A-League Charleston Battery takes on its Southeast Division rival the Richmond Kickers this Friday night in Richmond before a national television audience on FOX Sports World. The match is to be played at U of R Stadium, kick off is set for 8:00 PM. The Battery (12-5-4, 39 points) enters the game six points clear of second place Richmond (10-7-4, 33 points).
This is the third of four games between the two Clubs scheduled for the 2003 regular season. Charleston defeated Richmond in both previous games this year, once at U of R stadium and once home at Blackbaud Stadium. The final game between the Battery and the Kickers is set for August 16 at Blackbaud Stadium.
Richmond is led by 3rd year Head Coach, Leigh Cowlishaw. Cowlishaw steered the Kickers to the A-League Championship match in 2002 after posting a regular season record of 13-9-6; Richmond lost the final 2-1 in OT to the Milwaukee Rampage.
Richmond played twice last week earning a home win and an away tie in two games versus the Rochester Raging Rhinos. The Kickers held a 2-1 lead until the 90th minute in the game played at Rochester but conceded a late goal that led to the stalemate.
The Battery enters the game on the heels of a tough two-match road-swing that saw them lose 1-0 in OT in Toronto and then salvage a 2-2 tie versus three-time A-League Champions the Rochester Raging Rhinos.
