Charleston SC. The Charleston Battery (5-1-1) hits the road Wednesday for a two-match northern road swing. The Battery takes on the Northeast Division Pittsburgh Riverhounds (3-3-1) Wednesday night then continues with a Friday night match versus the Syracuse Salty Dogs (5-2). Charleston is currently in 1st place in the Southeast Division with 16 points.
Charleston played the Pittsburgh Riverhounds twice in 2002 drawing at home and winning the return away match. The Riverhounds missed the playoffs finishing with a record of 8-15-5.
This is Pittsburgh Head Coach Tim Carter’s first full season in charge after taking over late in 2002. Carter is a former Director of Youth Development for the United States Soccer Federation and also coached at Illinois State University, Eckerd College and Duke University.
Pittsburgh strengthened its roster during the off-season adding 2002 Battery midfielder Justin Evans. A native of Pittsburgh, Evans played for the Riverhounds in their inaugural season before transferring to Major League Soccer. Last season with Charleston, Evans played and started 29 games, tallying 4 goals and 2 assists.
Pittsburgh lost to the Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-1 in a match played in Pittsburgh last Saturday night. Thiago Martins scored the lone Riverhounds goal; Martins leads the league in scoring with 7 goals and 2 assists for 16 points.
