Player Appreciation Picnic 2005 Photo Gallery Home    Battery   Updated 09/11/2005
These photos are from the Player Appreciation Picnic this past August. The major draw for Regiment members, this picnic is loads of great fun. The coaches and players are on hand for autographs, conversation and fun and games. We were pleased to host the second annual "Justin Evans Kickball Tournament" though Justin did not repeat as champion - we did at least get another Penn State alum (Gabe) to claim that honor. Coach Gorman was thrilled about the news! If you've a BS in BBQ, we sure could use help cooking all the food! The Regiment provide the hot dogs, hamburgers, the Groves' secret recipe chicken and all the drink, snacks and everything else to make a picnic a PAR-TAY. So stop reading this, JOIN the Regiment now and come on out for the 2006 Picnic!
10:00AM setup time The Board members arrive early to get everything for the picnic set up and ready for the picnic. With all that food and drinks to get ready, it took some time and muscle to prepare.
Play time! After having finished setting up the kids table, Benjamin, Bethany and Carolyn get the balloons ready. I am not sure how many were left by the time the picnic actually started!
2005 Regiment Board members To help put names with the faces, for the first time in history the board members are all here in one photo! From left, top then bottom row: Anthony and Sara Graves, Charlotte and Larry Groves, Kim and Jim Gregory, and Jeff Uyak and Dieu Nguyen. Click here for more information on the board.
Now that's a fire! Notice there is no one standing near the fire. We came closer to burning the shelter down this year ... just kidding, Karl. We got the fire going early to let the coals get nice and hot for even cooking. Can't you just feel your eyebrows curl as they're singed?!
I do and I do and I do for you kids... Here Jim is shown cooking - on one of the hottest days of the year, we're told- both figuratively and literally. Primarily responsible for the cooking at the picnic, I bet if we shoved one of those turkey button-thingies in him, it would have popped up! Thankfully, Bethany's chilled water balloon neckpiece did the trick to cool him down.
BBQ Bock Bock! Larry brushes on the secret formula for his chicken. I don't think there was any left after eveyone went through the line, most notably Josh Smith and Chris Doyle. I think we'll have an eating contest next season - that'll be one for the history books!
Orders Up! With the greasy efficiency and cleanliness of a "C" grade restaurant -kidding- the Regiment members stand in line to keep the food line stocked. Uh, yeah ... we promise to work on that for next year guys. We ran out a few times, but luckily there was enough other food to keep people eating.
Check it out! No detail was left out .. the kids got animal plates and there was a ton of food out for everyone! Carolyn took advantage of the players in attendance to get their autographs too! The picnic is a great way to get to know your favourite players.
Dig In!! With the food on the table everyone digs in. I hope there's enough food!
More eating! Another couple photos of people enjoying the grub. Everyone, stand back, here comes Doyle again!
You've GOT to be kidding! Dieu seems to be saying "What do you mean no one told these guys about the air-conditioned room?!" Shortly after being told about it, the whole team had a "meeting" in the cool room. We were at the point of cancelling the Regiment Games due to the heat, but we got word that Justin was primed for defending his Kickball crown. Games on, eh!
Eggrace! As Carolyn takes off, egg well-balanced and comfy, Augie and daughter take to the course. She seems to say "Hey Dad, I got this, go away!" Everyone watches the race as Gabe anxiously awaits his turn!
More Eggrace! Boyzzz hands off to Bethany as Jonathan and his bodyguard take the lead. I think Uziel is still wondering WHY we're doing this. In the second photo it's brother against sister, and family teis are cast aside in this race for all the glory of making Eggracing History!
Check this out! Here's a closer look at Jim's Ice Hat and the crowd of spectators who came in throngs to watch the eggrace and kickball game. We had a nice mix of Battery staff, players and families in attendance, and the noise was deafening!
The Arms Race Here are some photos of the arm-in-arm race. Mikey drew the easier load as he cruised to victory, while Alon dragged a kid almost his size slowly across the line. Augie also had a light load, but Ben did well with this unconventional form hauling Zhylla up and back the length of the track.
More Arms Racing Uziel and Goos are neck and neck with their loads. Raven appears to be holding on for dear life! Ugo deftly hauls this large young man as Justin takes Liam to new heights during his run. I think we all lost count as to who won, but everyone -however they were hauled- had fun!
Kickball Here's action photos from the Second Annual Justin Evans Kickball Classic. Jim explains the rules as Justin's team goes "to bat" first. Alon and Gabe use secret handsignals to execute their game plan - PLAY BALL!
More Kickball Anthony, relegated to watching this year despite his new shoes (!), decides to drag the beer cart out to the field. After seeing the competition, some speculated that Justin hired Anthony to help win the game by 'doping' the players! The second photo shows the actual winning run that dethroned the champions! There was much controversy, and will sure start a heated rivalry brewing at this annual event.
Champeens! Your 2005 Justin Evans Kickball Classic champions. Coach Gorman was thrilled to hear that another, though not the tournament's namesake, Penn State alum was awarded this prestigious honor.
Waterslide! The Graves brought the hit of the party - the inflatable water slide! Carolyn splashes down, and Chris -not about to be outdone by some kid- goes down it too! He says "Wow, that felt good!" I think everyone wanted to go down, but only a few brought suits. Make a mental note for next year, folks!
More Waterslide! Jonathan exhibits his grace on the slide. This guy showed the slide no mercy, as I think he may have taken the most trips down! Not to be outdone, Augie succumbs to the pressure of the growing crowd and takes the plunge as well. We thought the rookies would have to go down, but then Andrew reminded us that all 6'4" 215-lbs of Gabe Bernstein might wreck the slide, and the idea was vetoed. ha ha!
Still More Waterslide! Bethany prepares for her slide. She was so fast, I had to snap her standing still! And, here's Anthony enjoying the only thing anyone would let him do. Thankfully, he removed his "special kickball shoes" before venturing down the slide!
Even More Waterslide! Liam -I swear- is afraid of nothing. He made his fair share of trips up and down the slide as well. Again, not to be outdone, Wellington also was drawn down the slide. Took a while to dry off, eh? He swears the trip down was worth it.
Tale of Two Sides Here we have the line to get up -then down- the slide, and in contrast the line of everyone who REALLY wanted to go down the slide but didn't. There was quite a crowd watching the kids -bog and small- enjoy the ride.
Winding down... Here we see the exhausted faces of the players after a long day. Lazo, Tim, Greg and other guys are hanging out as the party winds down. Jason visits with Bill and Sandi Timms - somehow, he's found a rare cool drink!
Not a dry eye in the place.. Jim gives his obligatory speech in appreciation of the players, staff and everyone who does their thing during the season so we can do ours for the picnic. Props were given to Andre Rouette, the founder of E10 Underground, for bringing new life into the ground. Afterward, Jim gives a dry Augie the official "You have been pimped" tweak as Nigel waits his turn ..
The Gang's All Here Here are a couple shots of everyone in attendance at the 2005 Player Appreciation Picnic. All in all, it was HOT but a whole lot of fun. The waterslide was a big hit, and the kids liked it too. Jonathan and Justin contested the outcome of the kickball match, but swore to avenge their defeat in 2006! We'll be waiting ...
Vaya con Dios, Jose' As any good captain would, Justin leaves the party last. He stopped by to talk bikes with Sara, and I think he walked out with a decent "to go" platter as well.
Cleanup The most fun you can have after baking in the sun all afternoon, the Regiment crew and other kind souls settle in to slog out the shelter and clean up the place. After the rousing success of this year's picnic, no one minded pitching in to help.

The Regiment Board members wish to extend a huge thanks to the folks who helped out and attended this year's picnic. Afterall, this is one fringe benefit afforded only those joining the Regiment. The picnic is your chance to come out and meet other Battery supporters as well as the players, not to mention eat some GREAT food. You know I was kidding about the "C" rated restaurant ... right? Seriously, there is a sink there, with running water, and we used soap to wash our hands, serving utensils and everything! All kidding aside, thanks to everyone for coming - this was a great turnout considering the brutal humidity! And thankfully, no one was hurt this year ... (grin).
