4/23/2001 - English Premier League team, Ipswich Town, announced today that they will not be able to visit Charleston, for an exhibition match May 9th, with the A-League Charleston Battery. Ipswich's unprecedented success over the last month has left them poised for a European Champions League berth. This being the case, the May 19th fixture vs Derby County is now vital and the team physicians have advised against travel to Charleston, the week before the game. Ipswich will play the Charleston Battery in the summer of 2002.
Ipswich Coach George Burley,
"We are extremely sorry to have made this decision, we were all looking forward to the Charleston game and the break before the Derby County fixture. Unfortunately our medical staff is now strongly advising us, not to travel before this game. With a Champions League spot on the horizon I have to do what is best for Ipswich Town"
Burley continued,
"I am particularly sorry for the many Ipswich Town fans based in the US, I know that many were planning on traveling to the May 9th game. I'd like to thank them for their support and hope that they understand why I made this difficult decision. We will visit Charleston next summer and play the Charleston Battery"
Charleston Battery President Nigel Cooper said the following,
"This is a huge disappointment for us, we were all very excited about this match. Hopefully our fans will understand Ipswich's decision and join us in wishing them the best of luck for the rest of their season. We will issue full-refunds for all tickets purchased for the Ipswich Town game."
For ticket refunds please call the Charleston Battery office, (843) 971-GOAL.
